This dairy-free frozen hot chocolate is a quick and easy frozen chocolate drink. It hits the spot and tastes like a cold/ frozen hot chocolate, but is made without dairy.

This dairy-free frozen hot chocolate reminds me of the first one that I had at the famous Serendipity restaurant in NYC. However, this one is dairy-free and can easily be made at home! It is also Paleo and gluten-free.

Why this recipe works

  • It takes 5 minutes to make!
  • It hits the spot for that chocolate craving.
  • It serves one.
  • It is made with a handful of healthy ingredients.

Recipe ingredients

Ingredients needed to make frozen hot chocolate.
  • Honey– use a good quality honey. I like to use raw honey.
  • Cocoa powder– make sure it doesn’t have added sugar or flavors.
  • Coconut milk or almond milk– again, make sure there are no added sugars or flavors to your coconut milk or almond milk.
  • Vanilla extract– with or without alcohol works.
  • Ice– this makes your drink into a slushy texture.

See recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

Additions/ Substitutions

  • Instead of honey, you can use maple syrup.
  • Instead of coconut milk, you can use any non-dairy milk of choice.

How to make frozen hot chocolate

Step 1: Put all of the ingredients ( except for the ice) into a blender and mix.

Step 2: Add the ice to the blender and mix.

Expert tips

  • Flavor alternatives– you can add peppermint, orange zest, strawberry jam, or pumpkin spice to add a different flavor.
  • Toppings– you can top with a dairy-free whipped cream, dairy-free chocolate chips, or cacao nibs.
  • Use less ice for less of slushy consistency. Use more for more.

  1. 1) i know this is an old post
    2) a non-paleo friend and i were talking about cravings and this is hitting the SPOT for my chocolate fix tonight
    3) you probably figured this out sometime in the past 7 and a half years (holy dang), but using frozen banana instead of ice might help with that milkshake consistency.5 stars

    1. This is an old recipe! Glad you liked it!! I do love adding frozen banana to them… sounds like I need to make an updated version. 🙂

    1. I’ve been experimenting with different flavor variations. I’ve been really liking 2 Tbs honey, 2 Tbs cocoa, 1 cup of coconut cream, 1/2 tsp vanilla and 1.5 cups of ice. Maybe test it out with 1 Tbs cocoa. I also have tried adding frozen strawberries, which makes the cocoa flavor a bit less. 🙂

  2. Struggling today, the cravings for something sweet driving me nuts (don’t normally crave sweets). The family eating ice cream did not help! I went searching for a paleo frozen hot chocolate. AHHH…this did the trick…so yummy and chocolate! Was perfect and so glad I found your blog.5 stars

    1. Thanks for the comment! You’re lucky that you don’t normally crave sweets because that is all I crave! haha So glad the frozen hot chocolate did the trick. 🙂

  3. Oh my goodness this is delicious! Finally, an easy Paleo dessert that doesn’t really taste like a paleo dessert! Yummy!5 stars
